Ekiti commissioner slams N1bn suit on CP, Selenkere

Ekiti State Commissioner for Intergration and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Funminiyi Afuye, has sued the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Felix Uyanna, and the Mobile Police Commander, Gabriel Selenkere.

In a suit filed at the Ekiti State High Court, Ado-Ekiti, Afuye demanded N1 billion as exemplary damages for his unlawful detention and physical assault by Selenkere. The suit was brought pursuant to Order 11 Rules 123 and 5 of the Fundamental Rights {Enforcement] Rules 2009 and sections 6, 34, 41 and 46 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999. Afuye, was one of the people arrested by the Police on Sunday after the disruption of a rally of the All Progressives Congress by the Police led by Selenkere. Meanwhile, the Attorney-General of Ekiti State, Olawale Fapohunda, has indicated that the Directorate of Citizens in the Ministry of Justice was interested in the suit. He said that the State Government was committed to the protection of the rights of all those living in Ekiti State. Fapohunda added that all cases of alleged Police brutality and extra-judicial actions will be investigated with a view to ensuring the prosecution and dismissal from the force of erring police officers. He revealed that the Ministry of Justice had opened a public register on alleged human rights violations committed by the Mobile Police Commander in the state, Gabriel Selenkere. According to a statement by the Spokesperson, Kayode Fayemi Campaign Organisation, Dimeji Daniels, the purpose of the register is to give aggrieved members of the public and victims of abuse by Selenkere the opportunity to articulate their grievances with a view to achieving justice.
