2014 FIFA World Cup : 'Super Eagles Will Fly In Brazil'

SAN FRANCISCO, March 10, (THEWILL) - The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon.

Gbenga Elegbeleye, Monday said he was confident that the country's senior team, the Super Eagles, will perform well at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

He stated this during his budget defence with the House of Representatives committee on Sports.

Elegbeleye however said for the Super Eagles to make appreciable impact at the World Cup, the government must ensure prompt release of funds to enable them execute the tournament.

According to him, "Anything that we have to do with Nigeria's sport is very important.

For every competition that Nigeria participates, we should go there and win medals.

the World Cup is very important and I believe sincerely that we will surpass our previous outing in the World Cup," Egbeleye told newsmen.

He thanked President Goodluck Jonathan for his continuous support for sports and appealed to the finance ministry to ensure timely release of funds to ensure early preparation for the12 June-13 July World Cup.

"We are good to go for the World Cup because we have a president who is listening.

I appeal for timely release of funds, so that we can prepare for our competitions and have enough time to do camping, so that we can prepare properly for the competition and win laurels for the country," he said.

The NSC has a total allocation of N5,546 billion for 2014 out of which  N2,418 billion has been voted for sporting activities.

Nigeria is in group F and will play against Argentina, Iran and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
