AMISOM donates assorted medical supplies to flood victims in Jowhar region

MOGADISHU, Somalia, May 10, 2013/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) has donated 21 boxes of assorted medical drugs to the Governor of Middle Shabelle, Honorable Abdi Gino Alasow. The donation was made following an assessment mission on April 25 conducted by a team of AMISOM officers accompanied by the Deputy Governor of Jowhar and the Advisor of the Governor of Jowhar. The aim of the mission was to assess the scale of the damage caused by the flood which forced thousands of people to flee their villages.


Continued rains in the region have affected the population living along the Shabelle River by causing diseases such as malaria, typhoid and diarrhea. The flood had also devastated agricultural land and other property, and roads linking major areas have become impracticable.


The donation ceremony took place at AMISOM's Level II hospital. In attendance were AMISOM Chief of Administration Officer, Senior Civil Affairs Officer, Dr. Asea-Commanding Officer of Level II Hospital, the CIMIC Team, Senior Humanitarian Affairs Officer and the Deputy Governor of Jowhar, Hon. Yusuf Abdi Abdule.


The donation will go a long way in assisting in the prevention and treatment of affected population of Jowhar. During the ceremony, the Governor thanked AMISOM for the rapid response and added that, ''it is not the donation itself that matters, but the speed of response coming from AMISOM that we appreciateā€.


AMISOM Chief Administrative Officer- Mr. Timothy Kiguti-speaking at the ceremony, thanked the Governor and the Deputy Governor on behalf of AMISOM leadership and emphasized that this initiative is part of AMISOM's ongoing humanitarian life saving need assistance and this exercise will also be followed with further support to the people of Jowhar.
