March 23, (THEWILL) - The Federal Government has sacked the Acting Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission (ICPC), Professor Uriah Angulu (Gatan Nupe).

According to a letter dated March 18, 2011 by the Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Mr. Abdullah Yola, signed on behalf of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Bello Adoke (SAN), Augulu’s sack takes immediate effective.

It said Angulu’s removal was in compliance with the provision of section 3(4) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offence Act, CAP. C31, LFN 2004 which states that the chairman shall be a person who has held or is qualified to hold office as a judge of a Superior Court of record in Nigeria.

Professor Angulu’s controversial sack however comes a few days after the disclosure by the ICPC that it had unearthed a N6 billion fraud at the National Judicial Institute (NJI). The anti-graft commission had also stated that the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu has been working round the clock to stop it from prosecuting the Administrator of the NJI, Justice Umaru Eri (rtd).

The letter further said a retired Assistant Inspector General (AIG), Dr. Rose Abang Wushishi (rtd) has been appointed as new Acting Chairman of the agency in the interim.
