Over 500 Women Of Ebenebe Besiege Anambra State Government House
Awka, the capital of Anambra State was gripped with fear yesterday as over 500 women from Ebenebe community in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State besieged the state Government House in what analysts described as "the mother of all protests" demanding for immediate removal of the town President General, Mr Cletus Osieme and disbandment of the town Vigilant Group alluding them to be the cog in the wheel of peace in the community.
It would be recalled that the protesting women who bear placards of distinct inscriptions such as: “Osieme is a bad leader, we don't want him”, "We need a good vigilante, not Osieme and his thugs, they are criminals”, Gov. Obi, we don't need Cletus as PG, sack him and set up a care taker committee” had embarked on a similar protest fortnight ago during which they registered their grievances at the office of the Anambra State Commissioner of police, Mallam Bala Nassarawa and to the office of the Special Advicer to the Governor on Chieftaincy matters, Chief Godfrey Muotolu but the assurances of the duo have not been met as they alleged.
According to the women, "the President General of the town, Mr. Cletus Osieme was using the vigilant service of the community to arrest and molest their husbands and children even as he has also embezzled over 7.5million naira palliative fund dished for developing the community by Governor Peter Obi of the state".
Speaking to Newsmen, Leader of the group, Mrs Nnatu Florence, alleged that PG of the town and the Traditional Ruler of Ebenebe, Igwe Christopher Nnaegbune had been at loggerhead over some years and all they (women) have tried to broker peace between two elephants was in vain.
She said: "SA to Gov on chieftaincy matters promised us that he will investigate the matter. But while waiting, we heard that our husbands and children in SARS office have been charged to court after which they were reminded to prison for no just cause. We don't know why Osieme is hell-bent in fermenting problem in the town. He is not even residing in Ebenenbe but in Onitsha. So, We are here to tell the Governor that we are tired of him. His tenure as PG expired since last 4 years but he refused to bow out in peace. Let the Governor dissolve his cabinet and set up a caretaker committee”.
Responding to the irate women, Governor Peter Obi represented by his Special Adviser to on Political Matters, Hon. Fidelis Okafor urged them to go home in peace noting that governor Obi would find a possible means of resolving the matter in order to restore peace and order in the community even as he averred that the circumstances leading to reminding in prison some alleged youths of the community over their involvements in the mayhem that locked it last month will also be checkmated.
It was gathered that those reminded in Prison include: Sunday Ibimmadu, Wilfred Okoye, Ugochukwu Ekenta, Okechukwu Nwafor, Nosike Nwora, Ejike Onwukobi, Felix Ani, Uchenna Nweke and Chinedu Enemmuo.
