Government of Canada launches call for proposals for the Canadian International Institute for Extractive Industries and Development
OTTAWA, Canada, June 20, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- Today, the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of International Cooperation, launched the Call for Proposals for the new Canadian International Institute for Extractive Industries and Development (CIIEID).
In October 2011, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced that the CIIEID would be created to help strengthen natural resource governance in resource-rich developing countries in order to support their sustainable economic growth, create jobs, and reduce poverty. The Institute will also help developing countries improve their capacity to manage and implement responsible policies and regulations.
The Institute will be hosted at a Canadian university and will act as a centre for Canadian and world-class expertise in improving and strengthening in-country resource governance and management. The Institute will offer programs that include country-level needs assessment in extractive sector governance and management, assistance in developing or improving policies, planning and implementation of legislation and regulations, and provide technical assistance and training to help build capacity within governments.
"Canada has a long history and global expertise in the extraction of natural resources and Canadian universities are highly qualified to host this world leading institute," said Minister Oda. "The Institute will bring together the best in private sector, government, research and civil society expertise in Canada to help developing countries secure the greatest possible benefit from their natural resources."
The Call for Proposals outlines the selection process to be undertaken to determine the host university for the Institute. An independent multi-sectoral External Advisory Panel will recommend the most qualified proposal.
