DAMATURU, June 12, (THEWILL) – Leader of the Yobe State House of Assembly, Alhaji Adamu Degubi, was on Tuesday shot dead by gunmen suspected to be adherents of the Boko Haram Islamist sect.

Speaking to THEWILL anonymously, a source said Degubi, a member of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) representing Nangere Constituency at Yobe State House of Assembly (ANPP), was killed at his residence at Tandari area, behind Remind Home, Potiskum, in the northern state.

According to the source, the incident occurred at about 8:20am when he was about entering his vehicle, to embark on an official trip to Damaturu.

“Two gunmen came and took positions near the house of Deguri, knowing that he would soon come out into his vehicle,” he said. “They shot him three times in his head and chest; his driver and his wife immediately rushed him to Potiskum General Hospital, where his death was certified.”

A relative of the deceased disclosed that the lawmaker had been operating from hiding prior to his killing, having admitted that he was unsafe due to the state of insecurity in the town.

“He had been disguising, and he was tactical in his movements but finally they got him,” he lamented. “It is quite unfortunate.”

Also confirming the incident, Commissioner of Police Moses Onareti said, “True, it has happened. It is unfortunate. Police have swung into action but so far, no arrest has been made.”
