Huhuonline.com / can disclose that an early morning fire incident which engulfed Mile 2 area in Lagos state has killed scores of people and burnt over 35 vehicles, even as casualty figure remains undisclosed.

Huhuonline.com understands that the incident occurred when a tanker loaded with premium motor spirit (PMS) lost control in the Mile 2 area of the state, overturned and emptied its contents on the road before going up in flames.   Mile 2 is known for serious traffic lock-jam as a result of the number of people living in the area and vehicles plying the road.

Though rescue efforts were still on-going as at the time of filing this report, those at the scene explained that with the sudden nature of the explosion that resulted after the accident, many drivers and passengers were caught unaware.

Eyewitnesses at the scene said the tanker with plate number XB 370 ATN, was descending from the Mile 2 Bridge at midnight when the driver suddenly lost control leading to the fuel compartment overturning with its content running the road.   Most of the vehicles and human beings affected were burnt beyond recognition as they littered the scene of the incident.

Properties and goods around the area were also burnt. Some of the vehicles included private cars, inter-state commuter buses of Osariemen Motors, Ufuoma Motors, Lord's Banner Motors, and commercial buses popularly called Danfo .

The eyewitnesses also believe that the tanker driver and his colleague may have escaped unhurt as the doors of the tanker were open with the headlight still left on as at Saturday morning.

Though officials of the state government have condoned off the area, residents and eyewitnesses are angry that emergency calls to relevant agencies immediately the incident occurred were not responded to.
