UNAMID Chief: 2012 must be year of peace for Darfur

The Joint Special Representative/Joint Chief Mediator (JSR/JCM) a.i., Ibrahim Gambari, pledged today in Graida, South Darfur, to work with all stakeholders to make 2012 a year of peace for the people of Darfur.

The JSR/JCM met with the residents of Donki Abyei IDP camp to explain the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD) and urge support for the agreement. He said that he would use his position as head of the AU-UN mission and Joint Chief Mediator to persuade those who had not joined the agreement to take part in DDPD, which was signed by the Government of Sudan and the Liberation and Justice Movement, because it constituted a good base for progress toward peace and stability in Darfur. The envoy stressed that security would remain UNAMID's highest priority and that the Mission would continue to maintain a robust posture in protecting civilians.

The JSR/JCM also met with the Commissioner of Zalingei and inaugurated a block of classrooms constructed in Graida town by the Nigerian battalion.
