Inauguration of Joint Commission established by Doha Document for Peace in Darfur

KHARTOUM, Sudan, December 15, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- All media are invited to the opening ceremony of the inaugural meeting of the Joint Commission, which is one of the major provisions related to the Ceasefire and Final Security Arrangements of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD). The ceremony will take place on Sunday, 18 December 2011, at 9:00 hours, at the Corinthia Burj Al-Fateh Hotel, Khartoum.

The meeting will be led by the Joint Special Representative (JSR) of the African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) and Joint Chief Mediator ad interim, Ibrahim Gambari, who is also the Chairperson of the Joint Commission. The commission composes representatives of the Government of the Sudan, the Liberation and Justice Movement, the State of Qatar, the League of Arab States and the European Union. Canada, China and Norway are observers in the Commission.

The Joint Commission is set up to resolve disputes among parties, referred to by the Ceasefire Commission. Its functions include the follow-up of the implementation of the Permanent Ceasefire and the Final Security Arrangements as enshrined in the DDPD, and the arbitration of irregularities and violations, among others.

JSR Gambari will brief the press on the outcome of meeting after its conclusion (at approximately 15:30 hours), in the same location.
