When: Thursday 15 December 2011

Where: Hotel Intercontinental Nairobi

The United Nations Resident & Humanitarian Affairs Coordinator, Mr. Aeneas Chuma will jointly with the Ministry of State for Special Programmes & Ministry of Northern Kenya and other Arid Lands launch the 2012+ Kenya Emergency Humanitarian Response Plan (EHRP) appeal seeking US$764 million to address humanitarian needs in 2012.

The 2012+ Kenya Emergency Humanitarian Response Plan is jointly developed by the United Nations, NGOs and Government Departments and outlines key priorities that require attention for response in the coming year.

The Plan was developed to respond to acute humanitarian needs in Kenya including drought, the ongoing refugee crisis, floods, internal displacement and urban humanitarian challenges. The strategy has also adopted a medium to long term approach in recognition of the need to build resilience among those repeatedly affected by emergencies. It will continue to provide an opportunity for longer term planning and takes into account the main-streaming of disaster risk reduction across all sectors and promotion of sustainable solutions through 54 organizations (12 UN agencies, GoK and 42 NGOs). The Response Plan is also in line with the objectives of the Kenya Country Programme on Ending Drought Emergencies, presented at the Horn of Africa Heads of State Summit in September. The 2012+ Appeals and Response Plan is also aligned with the humanitarian aspects of the Social Pillar of and the Government of Kenya's Vision 2030 long-term development plan.
