Jail Break: 5 Dangerous Inmates Escape From Port Harcourt Prison

PORT HARCOURT, August 07, (THEWILL) – Five dangerous and notorious inmates early Sunday morning broke out of the Port Harcourt Prison located along Creek Road, Port Harcourt, THEWILL can report.

Two of the escapees were however rearrested by a combined team of policemen and security operatives who stormed the prison following a distress call from officials.

Prison officials described the inmates as "dangerous criminals and notorious militants."

Confirming the incident, Deputy Superintendent of Prisons and spokesman of the prison service, Mr. A. Ota and police spokesman for the Rivers State Police Command, Mr. Ben Onwuegbulem gave the names of those rearrested as “Egbe Gboh and Anthony Akanimo”, a convicted kidnapper and a suspected kidnapper respectively.

The police did not name the 3 other inmates.
Mr. Onwuegbulem said, “Iron beds were used as ladder to cross into Bundu and Abuja waterfronts”.

THEWILL learned that about 23 others who had attempted to use the same means to escape were apprehended, while Prison personnel have carried out an audit of inmates in the facility.

In an SMS to THEWILL, the spokesman said an investigation is underway.
