SAN FRANCISCO, July 18, (THEWILL) – The London Metropolitan Police has issued a permit for a rally tagged: ‘Justice For Deltans Rally’ being organized by a Delta State pressure group, Umu Anioma Worldwide in furtherance of its support for the prosecution of a former Governor of Delta State.

The demonstrators at the 9.am rally are rooting for a proper prosecution of a former Governor of oil-rich Delta State and politician, Chief James Onanefe Ibori, who is being tried for various felony cases bordering on corruption and laundering of more than $200 million dollars of state funds during his tenure as chief executive of the state between 1999 and 2007.

Ibori has however maintained his innocence, saying the charges are politically motivated. Irrespective of Ibori’s claim, some of those charged alongside the politician have been convicted by juries of the Southwark Crown Court and sentenced to various jail terms.

Demonstrators are expected to attend the rally from the United States, Europe and Nigeria, according to Lauretta Onochie, Spokesperson Umu Anioma Worldwide.

A Monday statement to THEWILL from the Deltans For Justice rally organizers said, “We want to say thank you to all those who have called or written to offer their support and encouragement.

“We are pleased to report that we have obtained appropriate permit from Metropolitan Police regarding our proposed rally of Friday July 22, 2011 at 9am.

“It will be a peaceful rally where we will speak for ourselves as free-born Deltans and not as hired hands. We will be telling the world the truth and nothing but the truth about the situation in Delta state. We will let them know that we are a breed of Nigerians who have lived through years of massive corruption by those who asked to serve us. We will let the world know that we are assuming our rightful position of holding all elected and appointed political officers accountable.

“Most importantly, we are, by this rally, putting corrupt Nigerians on notice that it will no longer be business as usual.

“Please invite your friends and families to this rally at the premises of the Southwark Crown Court, 1 English Grounds Off Tooley, Street, London, SE 2 HU, United Kingdom
