ABUJA, May 19, (THEWILL) – The outgoing PDP Governor of Gombe State and Senator-elect representing Gombe Central Senatorial District, Alhaji Danjuma Goje has joined the race for the Senate presidency.

Goje, who announced his candidacy today, will challenge incumbent President David Mark who has received the backing of the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following the party’s decision to zone the seat to the North Central zone where Mark hails from.

Mark had also tactically received the backing of majority of the current senators following the successful amendment of a Senate rule that bars fresh senators from occupying principal positions in the Senate.

Mark had also received the support of majority of the influential senators in the Senate.

However, Goje, who won the Senate race for Gombe Central on the platform of the PDP, hails from the North East zone, where the party has zoned the Chairman of the PDP to.

It is however unclear whether the influential Gombe governor would be able to muscle out of the Senate seat considering the amount of support he currently enjoys from his party leaders and the Presidency.

Following Goje’s decision to run, Senators under the platform of the Northern Senators’ Forum, NSF shelved a planned endorsement of David Mark in its meeting on Thursday and instead agreed to consult wider on the issue before making a formal pronouncement.
