ABUJA, April 10, (THEWILL) - Senate President, David Mark of the People Democratic Party (PDP) was today declared winner of the senatorial contest in the Benue South Senatorial District.

The declaration has however aroused a series of controversies as exit polls in the state had suggested otherwise as at last night.

The ACN had a very impressive showing in the NASS races in other parts of the state beating the PDP overwhelmingly.

INEC returning officer, Prof. Moses Adeyemo in declaring Mark winner of the race said polled a total of 147,923 to defeat his distant rival General Lawrence Onoja of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) who scored 79,433, All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) Inya Inya 7,761 and congress for Progressive Change (CPC) Sunday Agbo 2,740.

From the detailed results Local Government by Local Government, Senator Mark won overwhelmingly in all the Nine Local Government areas that made up the Benue South Senatorial zone.

Mark who held a victory parley with his Campaign Co-ordinators, supporters, and workers after the result was declared urged them not to deterred by any falsehood because no amount of lies no matter the logic can defeat the solid foundation of the truth.

He promised his people that he will continue to provide quality leadership and representation saying, “I will not let you down, I will do only those things that will bring honour and glory to the people of Benue South, the State and the Nation at large.

However, Mark dismissed as false the insinuation earlier in the day that he had lost the election went, saying “you can see from the INEC result that I won overwhelming, squarely and convincingly.

“I can assure you from the bottom of my heart that I will not betray this trust and confidence. I will do my best to meet the yearnings and aspirations of my people, what is dear to all of us is the creation of Apa state. I will drive the will to assure its actulisation.”

Senator Mark extended the olive branch to his opponents stressing that “we must build together. All hands must be on deck and we must do this in the overall interest of all our people. For me, there is no victor no vanquished. The people of Benue South are the true winners.”

He thanked the people for the support and charged them to remain steadfast and ensure that they participate in the next stages of the elections.
