SAN FRANCISCO, Feb 09, (THEWILL) – Justice Ayo Isa Salami today got a headway in his battle to remain as the President of the Court of Appeal following the decision of the National Judicial Council (NJC) which said it is inappropriate to force a promotion on him.

The NJC which also has Justice Salami as member held an emergency meeting in Abuja as part of efforts to salvage the image of the judiciary following the tension between the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu and Justice Salami over the ‘Greek Gift’ promotion which Salami said was a ploy to remove him as President of the Court of Appeal.

The NJC, which is one of the powerful regulatory judiciary statutory bodies, is made up senior serving judges, retired judges, President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), former NBA Presidents and select distinguished Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN).

Recall that Justice Salami in a lawsuit filed Tuesday at a Federal High Court in Abuja alleged that his problem with the CJN started after he refused to subvert justice in the prolonged Sokoto State Governorship election litigation. He said the CJN had summoned him to his office and instructed him to influence the decision of the Appeal Court panel so that the Governor of Sokoto State, Aliyu Wamakko is not removed as Governor of the State.
