INEC Extend Voters Registration by a Week
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has extended the closing date of the ongoing voters registration exercise by a week. The voters' registration exercise which commenced 15/01/2011, was scheduled to end 29/01/2011. But with this extension, the voters registration exercise will now end on 05/02/2011.
A statement issued by Alhaji Abdullahi Kaugama, secretary to the commission, said, 'Following the new amendment to section 9(5) of the Electoral Act 2010, as amended, the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) has extended the ongoing Voters Registration exercise by seven days'.
'The extension will take effect from Sunday, January 30 th , 2011 to Saturday, February 5 th 2011. This is to enable all eligible voters who were unable to get registered within the previously stipulated time of January 15 th to 29 th to do so during the extension'.
'Meanwhile, the display of the preliminary list of voters for claims and objections will now be from Febuary 12 th to 17 th , 2011'.
INEC hereby urges Nigerians to use the opportunity of the extension to register accordingly, Kaugama affirmed.
