GOVERNOR Ikedi Ohakim has approved the appointment of Victor Ibenye Ugbala as the Secretary to the Imo State Government.

According to a statement by the Principal Secretary to the Governor, Okey Anyanwu, Ugbala's appointment 'takes immediate effect'.

Ugbala, a lawyer who hails from Okporo Orlu, Imo-West Senatorial Zone, was hitherto the Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Duties.

His appointment was sequel to the resignation of Mr. Cosmas Iwu, who had been Secretary to the State Government since 2007.

The Guardian gathered that Iwu resigned to pursue his political ambition of becoming a senator representing the Imo-North Senatorial District.

Meanwhile, Ohakim has urged Imo residents who are of voting age to avail themselves of registration exercise which will start in January next year.

Ohakim made the appeal during his Christmas cum political tour of 10 federal constituencies in the state.

He also urged church authorities to assist the agencies handling voter education programme to ensure free and fair elections next year.
