Cancellara is the latest rider to leave the Saxo Bank team

Fabian Cancellara has signed a three-year contract to race for the Luxembourg Pro Cycling Project.

The Swiss rider, a four-time world time trial champion, will work with Andy and Frank Schleck following his decision to leave Team Saxo Bank.

The Schleck brothers left Saxo Bank at the end of the season and have signed some of their former team-mates.

A statement from Cancellara's new team said they were “thrilled” to have agreed a deal for the 29-year-old.

Luxembourg Pro Cycling Project are managed by Brian Nygaard, former media officer at Saxo Bank and Team Sky.

“I had many interesting options, but in the end I knew that the project in Luxembourg would have all the ingredients I would need to continue improving myself without skipping a beat,” said Cancellara.

“It is a unique mix of familiar personalities with new surroundings which will ensure continuity while instilling a new motivation to make this project the most successful in cycling.”

In response, Saxo Bank signed three-times Tour de France champion Alberto Contador in August but he failed a drugs test for the banned anabolic agent clenbuterol in July.

The Spaniard is suspended from racing until an investigation by the International Cycling Union and the World Anti-Doping Agency has been completed.
