The National Centre for Energy and Environment in collaboration with the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) is organising a two-day conference on energy and climatic change in Benin.

The conference which has the theme, 'Deploying Renewable Energy Solutions to Combat Climatic Change', is expected to work out ways by which developing countries can access energy needed to improve quality of life without adding to the greenhouse gas emissions.

The director, National Centre for Energy and Environment of the University of Benin, Professor Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye said in Nigeria, apart from the emissions of greenhouse gases arising from activities of fossil fuel, energy production and utilisation, oil spillage and deforestation are threats to the environment.

'Deforestation particularly leads to desertification, reduction of environmental oxygen, flooding and erosion,' he said.

He said communities in Nigeria are under threat as a result of climate change, desertification, changes in rainfall pattern etc.

'It is against this background that the National Centre for Energy and Environment and the Energy Commission of Nigeria in collaboration with Envirofly Consulting UK, is putting together an international conference on energy and climate change. Countries such as Nigeria, Ghana, Benin Republic, South Africa and India will participate in the two day conference,' he said.
