Equatorial Guinea players celebrate a goal at the African championship

Equatorial Guinea will play Nigeria in the final of the African women's championship after beating hosts South Africa 3-1 on Thursday.

But it took extra time for the reigning African champions to advance and claim a place at next year's World Cup.

The regulation 90 produced exciting football and plenty of scoring chances for both teams but no goals.

The deadlock was eventually broken in the 12th minute of extra time following a Banyana Banyana defensive blunder.

Van Wyk failed to clear, allowing Salimata Simpore to place the ball beyond the reach of goalkeeper Mndaweni Thoko Zile.

Things got worse for the hosts six minutes later when defender Dluibu diverted a cross from substitute Jade Sayo into her own net.

Another defensive error sealed South Africa's fate when Simpore buried the ball in the back of the net.

The South Africans got their consolation goal through striker Dlamin Amanda.

Equatorial Guinea will represent Africa in Germany, along with the Nigeria's Super Falcons.
