With the eventual launch of his casual clothes line on Saturday October 20, controversial rapper Ruggedman has become the first Nigerian artiste to own a clothes range. Just like contemporaries 2face Idibia (2baba apparel), Weird MC (0907 wear), Psquare (ajeh wear) and D'banj (Koko wear), Ruggedman had paid lip service to the idea of owning a clothing line for several years. But the rapper took the bull by the horns in 2007, setting machinery in place for effective take off of his clothing line.

An earlier date for the launch, September 20 (the rapper's birthday, after which his line is named) was set aside due to logistic reasons. But on October 20, at the Silverbird Galleria in Victoria island, Lagos, Rugged, 32, made history as he gathered friends, fans and the media to witness the unveiling of a range of urbane, casual wears totally customised for him, and meant for mass purchase.

'Having my own clothing line is something I've always wanted. So I felt there's a better opportunity for me, now that I'm established, at least in Nigeria' he said excitedly after the launch.

On how his collections are made, he explained, 'I have a team of designers I am working with right now. We sit down, rub minds about designs and fabrics before we go into production. They are Dayo,Marco Martinez, Chris,Abbey and Amara. These are a bunch of talented fashion designers, Nigeria and the rest of the world should watch out for.

Fabrics we use are goten from both in and outside Nigeria. I am still doing my research into clothing generally because I still have a lot to learn in order to improve what I am giving my fans and people'.

20th September wear is already available at Nu Metro media stores.
