A chimpanzee named Guru who suffers from alopecia has become the centre of attention at the Mysore Zoo in southern India.

The condition, which usually only affects humans, causes hair on the body to fall out.

The 20-year-old male chimp looks incredibly human, with crowds gathering to see his muscles resembling those of a physically fit and strong man.

"Everybody wants to see his biceps and triceps," said Dr Suresh Kumar, one of the zoo's vets.

"He looks like a human being sitting naked in front of you. It looks amazing."

Guru was rescued from a local circus and was moved to the zoo in 2003 to receive treatment for the disease.

So far there have been no positive results and the zoo's medical team plan to consult a human skin doctor.
