A viral video of Oyo State residents chanting pro-Tinubu slogans while holding 1kg sachets of Semovita has triggered heated debate online over poverty, voter inducement, and the politics of handouts ahead of 2027 general elections.

The clip, shared on X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday, captured residents at an All Progressives Congress outreach event clutching the food items and chanting “Jagaban 2027”, a nickname for President Bola Tinubu. The scene drew immediate criticism across social media, with many Nigerians linking the gesture to entrenched poverty and political influence.

In the footage, dozens of beneficiaries could be seen raising the sachets of semovita as they declared support for the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections. The distribution was reportedly organized as part of a grassroots mobilization effort by party stakeholders in the state.

The video quickly went viral, amassing thousands of views and comments within hours. Reactions were largely condemnatory, with X users lamenting what they described as the “commodification of votes” and the exploitation of economic hardship for political gain.

A user, #SemiNigerian, wrote: “They just sold themselves for less than 4,000 naira. My God.” Another, #Omo_Barogun, stated: “You no fit understand this country. May God heal us. Weaponizing poverty is the only method our politicians have at their disposal.”

#Byrdbenson911 added: “Blame it on poverty. And the person giving that insult knows about it. And he will continue to keep them there in their poverty.”

#EphraimObi001 also lamented: “Chai! Seeing this kind of thing shatters my heart. Why can’t Nigerians learn for once?”
