Ondo names Odugbemi OSUSTECH VC

The Ondo State Government has announced the appointment of Professor Tolu Olukayode Odugbemi as the Vice Chancellor of the Ondo State University of Science and Technology, OSUSTECH, Okitipupa. Odugbemi, A Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science was the immediate past Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

 
A statement by the Commissioner for Information, Mr Ranti Akerele says government after a painstaking and careful search settled for Odugbemi, a Professor of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology. He hails from Oke- Igbo in Ile-Oluji Local Government Area of Ondo State.

 
The 1964 product of Christ's School Ado Ekiti holds a B. Sc. Degree in Microbiology of the University of Lagos; an MB, BS degree of the same institution, a PhD from University of Sheffield Medical School,  Sheffield, England and an MD also from the University of Lagos.

 
Apart from being a proud recipient of several professional degrees as Dip Bact (Toronto), June, 1976; FWACP (WA) 1976, FMC Path (Nig), 1981, MRC Path (UK), 1984 and FRC Path (UK), 1993, Odugbemi, a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science (FAS) was also at the University of Rochester, Rochester, New York for a Pre-doctoral Fellowship in Microbiology as well as the School of Hygiene, University of Toronto, Canada.

 
From a humble beginning as a Science Teacher in Okeigbo/Ifetedo Grammar School, in 1965, Professor Odugbemi has passed through all known teaching and research routes to become a professor of many years standing and an academic of impeccable records.

 
The man, who has made several Postgraduate Medical Fellowship Supervisions, has also supervised 9 Doctoral thesis as well as many other M.Sc/M.Phil graduates.

 
He is a distinguished member of several professional organizations among which is the American Society for Microbiology from 1979, the Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland and the African Union against Venereal Diseases and Trepanomatoses among many others. These are apart from his being a Fellow of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.

 
Also, Professor Odugbemi has served as a referee to several professional journals as well as an Examiner in Professional Examinations of many bodies.

As part of his academic responsibilities, he has also served as an External Examiner at Postgraduate levels (M.Sc, M.Phil & Ph.D) in several Academic Departments as well as External Examiner in Microbiology at Undergraduate levels in more than a dozen universities across the country.

He has also been the Editor-in-Chief, Nigerian Quarterly Journal of Hospital Medicine, effective 1996 to 2001 and has served in the Ad Hoc Review and Refereeing of Scientific Articles as part of his activities on the board of learned journals.

 
He has served on several National Committees/ Boards such as National Malaria Control Committee 1985/1987, National Committee on Sexually Transmitted Diseases Control, 1985 to 1988; was Chairman, Advisory Committee on Laboratory Training Programme, National Tuberculosis Control 1985/1986 and member of the Faculty Board of Pathology, National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria from 1985 to 1988 among many others.

 
On the international field, he was a member of the World Health Organization (WHO) Advisory group on Hospital-acquired infections (Nosocomial infections), member, Council of the West African Postgraduate Medical College; and member, before becoming Chairman, Research Committee and member of the Executive Board of the West African Health Community.
