Ex-governor El-Rufai ‘Dumps’ APC, Joins SDP
Indications have emerged that the former governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai of Kaduna State, has resigned his membership from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Reports also indicated that the former governor has moved to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) as a result of unresolved issues with the leadership of the ruling party.
According to reports, El-Rufai submitted his resignation letter to his ward in Kaduna State on Monday, expressing dissatisfaction with the direction APC has taken in recent years.
El-Rufai, who was among those who championed election victories for APC in 2015, 2019, and 2023, stated that recent developments within the party no longer align with his political beliefs.
He reportedly pointed out concerns about governance and how the party has handled internal matters, leading to his decision to step away.
He also pledged to support efforts aimed at strengthening democracy in Nigeria through his new party.
He was quoted as saying, “I have diligently served the APC and made my contributions to its viability as a political platform.
“However, developments in the last two years have confirmed a troubling disregard for democratic principles and progressive values that I hold dear.
“At this point in my political journey, I must seek another political platform for the pursuit of the progressive values I cherish.
“As a member of the SDP, I am committed to fostering a unified democratic platform to challenge the APC in upcoming elections.”
