NRC PROBES TRAIN DERAILMENT AT GOMBE

The Nigerian Railway Corporation is investigating the derailment of a goods train at Gombe to ascertain the immediate causes of the accident, the extent of damage and what it will cost to fix the problem.

The train, which was carrying cement from Bauchi, was heading for Ashaka, when it derailed at Kilometre 1137 + five poles, Kigarawal area of Gombe.

Although the ugly incident did not claim any lives, it has disrupted train operation along the route since September 10 when it occurred.

A statement by the corporation, which was obtained via e-mail on Thursday, quoted the Managing Director, NRC, Mr. Adeseyi Sijuade, as lamenting the situation.

He said, 'We are deeply saddened with the news of the train incident in Gombe. Our primary concern is the safety of train operations and we are indeed pleased that there was no loss of life. We will be doing all we can to return service to normal over the next few weeks.'
