The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, has described the commencement of operation at Port Harcourt Refinery as fulfillment of agreement on the part of the federal government.

The NLC President made this known on Monday, December 9 after top leaders of the organised labour unions toured the facility in Rivers State.

Understandably, the Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC) operates two refineries; the old plant with a capacity of 60,000 barrels per stream day (bpsd) and a new facility with 150,000 bpsd, bringing the refinery’s combined crude processing capacity to 210,000 bpsd.

Speaking after he was conducted around the facility, the NLC President said, “It's a continuation of an agreement we signed with government. When there was increase in pump price of petroleum products, part of the agreement was that this station must work.”

“And now that it is working, it is our duty to confirm that it is working,” Ajaero added.

Also, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), Festus Osifo, asserted that the union was satisfied with the level of developments at the refinery.

“Going through the plants, we were shown the various processing units. We were shown burners, we were shown the heat exchangers, we were shown the turbines and how these processes tie into the production of petroleum products at today.

“And to a very large extent, I and my team are satisfied with what we have seen with the level of work and details that went into that,” he said.

Oh his part, the President of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Williams Akporeha, said: “They took us round to re-confirm what we've already known as an insider. Before I came here, I knew that this was working.”
