ABUJA, Sept 10, (THEWILL) - The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has thrown its weight and support behind the candidature of President Goodluck Jonathan for the 2011 general elections.

National Chairman of the Party, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam in company of national officers of the party disclosed this in Abuja following the decision of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.

He said the philosophy for participating in the politics of Nigeria is to galvanize politicians and indeed Nigerians into generating ideas that will further the cause of this great nation, saying that it is not about winning elections at all cost.

"It is not about contesting elections when we think it is not necessary. It is for this reason that we as a party, at our National Working Committee (NWC), having taken a look at the current political circumstances in our country decided not to field any candidate in the forth-coming presidential election," he said.

"Consequently, we as a party have decided to support and work with President Goodluck Jonathan in the presidential elections in the interest of our dear country. The National Working Committee at the said meeting, having looked at all the great minds that have signified their intention to vie for the coveted office, found Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to have satisfied all the attributes set for ourselves which a leader should possess," he said.

Aniebonam noted with admiration that Nigeria is blessed with abundant human resources, as none of the people that have put themselves forward as presidential hopefuls are a push-over, adding that President Jonathan fits the expectations of the party stressing that "If he decides to run in the forth coming election, we shall support him."

He said that next year’s general election is the election in which the country must show that it is ready to join the comity of sustainable democracies.

"Simply put, it is one election in which the votes of every Nigerian must not only be counted, but must count," he said.

He emphasized that the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) as a major stakeholder in the Nigerian project and the much expected 2011 general elections, will leave no stone unturned to ensure that we get it right in the election so that Nigeria can hit the expressway to development.

He noted that the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) was one of the parties that has nurtured the country’s new democracy since the inception of the new democratic dispensation in 1999 to this present time, adding that the party is not a neophyte in election matters in the country, having contested consistently in every election even at the Presidential level, since the birth of this dispensation i.e. 1999, 2003, 2007.

The party argued that because of the concept of a new Nigeria, it has never shied away from declaring its readiness to strategically align with individual patriots who are prepared to change Nigeria for good, provided such individuals meet their own idea of leadership.

He used the occasion to congratulate Muslims who have successfully concluded the one month Ramadan fast, urging them to rededicate themselves to the teachings of Allah as enshrined in the Holy Koran.
