Speaking to newsmen in Abuja at the weekend, the lawmaker said releasing Al-Mustapha would be one of the greatest achievements of President Jonathan.

'I am calling on Mr. President to use his good office to please release Al-Mustapha who has been in detention since 1998. Northern Youths gathered recently and peacefully demonstrated, demanding for his release,' he said.

The former Kano State governor drew the attention of President Jonathan to the amnesty granted the Niger Delta militants who took up arms against the state, which was a more serious offence but were pardoned in the spirit of national unity and cohesion.

'I urge Mr. President to release them before October 1st so that northern emirs and leaders under the leadership of the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, who  are preparing to come and request for his release would rather come to say thank you to Mr. President,' Senator Gaya said.
