Family of the late Prime Minister of Nigeria, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa had disowned one Dr. Jhalil Tafawa Balewa, as member of the Balewa family.

"In a meeting held between members of the family and the said Dr. Jhalil, he could not with sincerity substantiate with conviction who his father (or mother) is among Abubakar Tafawa Balewa offspring. He was therefore advised to stop using the family name to seek undue publicity," a statement signed by one Alhaji Yakubu Abubakar Tafawa Balewa on behalf of the family said.

But other sources claimed that Jhalil is Balewa's son and that his mother is Yoruba.

However, police in Abuja are working to secure the release of Balewa who was said o have been penciled down earlier for a Ministerial appointment by President Goodluck Jonathan.
