Edo Doctors Strike As Gunmen Kidnap Professor Of Medicine

San Francisco, August 26, (THEWILL) – A professor of Medicine at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Professor. A. N. Onunu was on Wednesday night, August 25, 2010, abducted by gunmen at his residence in the Evbomore area of Benin City, Edo State.


THEWILL gathered that the gunmen stormed the residence of the medical professor at about 8.pm.


Following his kidnapped, all medical doctors in UBTH have suspended their services until the professor is released unconditionally. Also, the Edo State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has directed all doctors in the state to only render emergency services from 8 a.m. tomorrow (Friday), until he is returned.


An SMS to doctors in Edo State signed by the NMA PRO, Dr. Alohan said; "Following the kidnap of Professor Onunu of UBTH, all doctors in Edo State are to withdraw clinical services by 8.am tomorrow Friday, except emergencies in patients."


The Oba of Benin a few weeks ago performed a spiritual cleansing of the ancient city and reigned curses on criminals for perpetuating all sorts of atrocities in the state.


THEWILL could not confirm whether the gunmen have made any demands as at press time.
