The process of deregistering the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has commenced by the Federal Government.

This was learnt following the official registration of Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA), a breakaway faction of ASUU, as a trade union.

A reliable source at the Ministry of Labour and Employment disclosed that the Certificate of Registration will be presented to the new union today by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige.

The source explained that the move by the government is part of processes to deregister ASUU, who is currently on strike action since February 17.

It was learnt that CONUA registration was deemed fit with with a view to checkmating ASUU incessant strikes that always grind public universities.

“The Minister, on behalf of the federal government will today present Certificate of Registration to the Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA). With that, ASUU may cease to exist again in our universities,” the source said.

It would be recalled that the government in September had threatened to withdraw registration of ASUU as a trade union over its alleged failure to submit its audited reports as required by law in the past five year.

The Registrar of Trade Unions reportedly written a query to the union on why its certificate of registration should not be withdrawn for running foul of the law.

ASUU has been on strike since February 14 to press home its demands for improved funding for universities, a review of salaries for lecturers and the medium of payment of salaries, among other issues.
