The National Universities Commission has directed vice-chancellors across the country to re-open their respective schools and commence academic activities for students.

The directive was contained in a letter signed by the Director, Finance and Accounts of the NUC, Sam Onazi, on behalf of the Executive Secretary of the commission, Professor Abubakar Rasheed.

The letter which was obtained by newsmen on Monday, was addressed to all vice-chancellors; Pro-Chancellors and chairmen of governing councils of federal universities across the country.

Part of it reads: “Ensure that ASUU members immediately resume/commence lectures; Restore the daily activities and routines of the various University campuses.”

Recall that the National Industrial Court had ordered the striking universities lecturers to suspend the ongoing nationwide strike.

The order has, however, been appealed by the union's leadership with the stay of execution in process.

ASUU had been on strike since February 14 to press home the demand for improved funding for universities, a review of salaries for lecturers, among other issues.
