Reps Seek N10M Compensation For Family Of Slain Corp Member

ABUJA, July 25, (THEWILL) - The House of Representatives Joint Committees On Women Affairs, Women in Parliament and Human Rights has recommended a N10 million naira compensation for the family of a Youth Corper, late Miss Grace Adie Ushang, who was murdered last year in Borno State in her place of primary assignment.

The committees also want the deceased corp member to be immortalized and be given a post-humous award in the next National Award ceremony since she died on active service.

The three committees headed by Hon. Binta Garba Masi (Women Affairs), Hon. Nkiruka Onyejeocha (Women in Parliament) and Hon. Beni Lar (Human Rights) had investigated the murder of the corps member who was allegedly killed outside her residence where she was serving in Borno State.

In the report of the joint committees submitted to the House, it recommended that, "The Borno State Government should adequately compensate the family of the deceased." The committee recommended ten million naira (N10, 000,000.00).

It also recommended that the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), the Inspector General of Police; state governors and local government chairmen should ensure that the places corps members are housed and its environs are safe and secure.

‘Every corps member should be armed with simple security devices that can raise alarm if attacked and that the National Youth Service Corps regulation should be amended to review issues such as death, gratuity and allowances."

The committee noted that there was need for the management of the NYSC to constantly create awareness on the responsibilities of the state and local government to the corps members posted to their states as enshrined in the NYSC Decree 51 of June 16, 1993.

"That there should be speedy consideration and passing of the Bill on elimination of violence against persons as part of the legal instrument available to victims of violence."
