Gunmen Attack Enugu Police Checkpoint, Kill Two Officers

There was a reported tension in Enugu State capital following an attack unleashed by gunmen on a police checkpoint where two officers on duty were allegedly murdered on Thursday morning.

The incident occurred at Gariki, MTD area in Enugu South Local Government Area of the state capital.

Sources in the area said told newsmen that shootings were renting the air as residents scampered to safety in morning.

The source disclosed: “there is shooting at Gariki, MTD area and two policemen and some other persons have been killed.”

The gunmen were said to have attacked the checkpoint around 9:10 am.

At the time of filing this report, it was not clear whether the hoodlums attacked the MTD police station which is less than three poles from the checkpoint.

When contacted, the state Police spokesman, Daniel Ndukwe, did not confirm or deny the incident.

“Sorry, I have a meeting now,” he simply said in a text message.

Meanwhile, Enugu State government has imposed a a 24-hour curfew in Enugu East, Enugu South and Enugu North to contain the developing crisis.
