Let's Commit To Stopping Children Marriage - Mrs Obiano

The wife of the Governor of Anambra State and founder of the charity organization, Caring Family Enhancement Initiative, CAFE, Dr (Mrs) Ebelechukwu Obiano (Osodieme) has called for a collective action to end child marriage in Nigeria.

Mrs Obiano stated this at Ayamelum and Anambra West Local Government Areas, where she continued tour of the twenty-one LGAs in Anambra State.

Osodieme is visiting the four agrarian Council areas in Anambra State, namely, Ogbaru, Ayamelum, Anambra West and Anambra East, as the last ports of call in her annual schedule which was interrupted by the flood disaster in the areas, said that problems associated with child marriages negatively affects the growth and development of the young wives and stalls the progress of the society. We must do more to end the practice. She advice.

Speaking at the two local government areas where she also gave palliatives to over nine hundred and ninety indigent and physically challenged persons randomly selected from the eighteen communities that make up the two local government areas, Mrs Obiano said that the era of cultural indignity when the under-aged girl child is handed out for marriage has gone.

The governor's wife stated that the economic hardship instigated by the coronavirus pandemic calls for a social relationship to create a balance among low income families, emphasizing that all hands must be on deck to nip the ugly trend in the bud.

Mrs Obiano also called for the creation of an evening vocational training centres for newly-married female spouses, to learn handiworks that would help them support their homes financially, adding that such scheme would reduce the burden on the shoulders of the husbands.

The Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt Honourable Uchenna Okafor, who also represents Ayamelum at the state legislature, in his speech, said that the recent progress on the Otuocha-Omor-Anaku road, a federal government road, shows that the administration of Gov Obiano ably supported by his wife, Osodieme, places importance to meeting people's needs.

In their remarks at the respective local government areas, the Transition Committee Chairmen of Ayamelum and Anambra West Local Government Areas, Mr Benjamin Onyeabor and his Anambra West counterpart, Mr Sylvester Okafor, said that both local government areas have benefitted immensely from the dividends of democracy by the present administration made possible by Osodieme's strong collaboration with her husband, Governor Obiano.

The Anambra State Commissioner for Children and Women Affairs, Lady Ndidi Mezue, that of Lands, Hon Bonaventure Enemali commended the commitment of Mrs Obiano to the welfare of the less privileged and thanked her support the course of the girl-child through her NGO, CAFE.
