Stopping Generational Curses 

“I am the Lord your God, who rescued you from slavery in Egypt. Do not worship any other gods besides me. Do not make idols of any kind, whether in the shape of birds or animals or fish. You must never worship or bow down to them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not share your affection with any other god! I do not leave unpunished the sins of those who hate me, but I punish the children for the sins of their parents to the third and fourth generations. But I lavish my love on those who love me and obey my commands, even for a thousand generations.” Ex 20:2-6

Recently, I met a woman that was terminally sick and to worsen the situation, she was terribly afraid of celebrating her next birthday because her elder siblings died just before reaching that same age. There is curse of cancer and untimely death in her family. Thank God she is still alive today and that terrible cancer of the blood also removed. I know another family that their grandfather, their father and now their children groan under heavy bondage of immorality that would always mess up their life and careers. Another pastor friend would always open a ministry only to close it abruptly because it would never last. He is very gifted in the scriptures and wisdom, but nothing worked out for him and his family, until he identified it was a curse and dealt with it. I have seen families that unstable marriages, poverty, violence, insanity, failure, extreme struggles run in their lineage. Generational, family curses are real, very real. Yes, some believe in it and others do not, but that has in no way diminished the effects of these on the individuals, families and groups groaning under these terrible, biting, unseen spiritual hindrances. The truth is that curses are real and generational curses are very real. Even people who publicly do not accept this fact, go behind to seek help for these unseen limitation and hindrances. These may include sudden and untimely deaths in the family, persistent failure and lack of breakthrough, constant urge to commit suicide, crime, etc, marriage failures, relationship failures and generational shame and backwardness, near-success syndrome, strange or generational sicknesses, hearing strange voices, unhappiness, near-success syndrome, shame and even mysterious fear, etc. I just ministered to a lady that hears demonic voices and another entity speaks constantly through her. Though decent, beautiful and well-educated, but could not get married.

To show you how difficult these hindrances can be, even ministers, pastor, strong Christians also go through them. And this can result in extreme difficulty and total failure in ministry, marriage and life. Have you not seen totally frustrated dedicated Christians? I met one from Norway recently. He is totally dedicated and also totally frustrated. Most people backslide because of hardship and most times this hardship result from what we are discussing here. Some will rise greatly today, only to suddenly fall into shame the next day. Yes, I have seen so many of such people. Curses, generational curses are not respecter of persons, education, grammar, position, name, title, legalism, methodology or theology. No. Or haven’t you seen well-educated messed up lives? They are everywhere. The only thing these hindrances respect is the name of Jesus, knowledge, prayer, power and the word of God. If you have the right knowledge of the source of the problem, deal with it accordingly, persist in your efforts, you will be on your way to freedom and breakthrough. But, if you don’t, unfortunately, you may have to live in shame, pain, fear, unhappiness and failure all through your life and worse, pass on the same to the generations after you. God forbid!

So, what we will be doing here is to try to define generational curses and their manifestations and also to proffer solutions to them. I don’t want to pretend that this is a simple topic or that I know it all. No. But we must totally rely on God to give us the illumination to deal with it. Curses can be extremely difficult and sometimes hidden, but you must rely on divine revelations to successfully deal with them. Nobody is a master on this, except the Holy Spirit. He is the one who can properly identify and remove them, if you fully cooperate with Him. Curses are unseen and unidentifiable forces speaking against one's well-being, progress or existence. It can be an instrument for punishment or persecution. You see the effects manifesting physically, but the cause or source remains unseen. It can come from man, from Satan or even from God. You call that from God divine curses. Now, all of them can turn generational if not properly dealt with. That is, they can be transferred from parents to their children, to children's children and it goes on. From one generation to another. For example, if the generation curse is poverty, every generation that comes up from that lineage will be poor or live in terrible financial, economic struggle. If it is sickness, you find out that their generations will always come down with the same type of ailment of even worse. And generational curses tend to grow worse by generations.

Now, what are the things that can bring about curses that can turn generational? They are idolatry, immorality, stealing, treachery, murder, mockery, disobedience, wickedness etc. All these can bring terrible generational curses to a family or to a place. Yes, individuals, families, cities, nations and environments can be cursed. You can find all these around us and in the bible. Now can we take them one after the other?

Idolatry/Occultism
One of the things that attract divine curses that will always run generational is idolatry. Idolatry is simply giving God's place or worship to other things. It means leaving the creator to worship the created. This worship could be to Satan, spirits, demons, angels, humans, animals, etc. Or to their inanimate representation in rocks, stones woods, images, objects, etc. Any form of diversion of God's place and worship to any created being or object is idolatry. Those that their parents practiced occultism, idolatry, witchcraft will always have a heavy generational price to pay. And the deeper the practice the harder and complex the curses that will follow. Curses that follow idolatry and occultism are often terrible and stubborn. And this is what many families are going through today. The only worship that God accepts is the one that is coming to him through his only begotten son Jesus Christ. Anything short of this will definitely attract God's punishment (curses). God hates idolatry with passion. No wonder He has always said that it is distasteful and abominable to Him. He calls it spiritual adultery, spiritual harlotry and union with demons. And the Bible has always identified Satan as the head of all idolatry and occultism. If you are into any form of these practices, just know that you are inviting curses upon yourself and your next generations. We read it at the beginning from Exodus 20:2-6: He said He will punish the children of idolaters and occult people for the sins of their parents to the third and fourth generations. My God! This is terribly fearful. We will continue. Blessings!
