Empowers Women IDPs, Cleared and Rehabilitated Boko Haram Suspects With Skills Acquisition Kits and Tools

The Borno State Commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Zuwaira Gambo has revealed that the State Governor, Professor babagana Umara Zulum has directed her Ministry to carry out general renovation, rehabilitation and remodelling of Blind Workshop Center Budum as part of the 10- point agenda of the Governor.

She further said that Govenror Zulum has directed her Ministry which oversees the vulnerables, widows, orphans, physically challenged, Women IDPs among others to carry out rcomplete renovation of the Family Support Programme Nursery and Primary School Maiduguri which has been in a very bad physical state.

The Women Affairs Commissioner stated this Monday in her office at the first quarter ministerial press briefing of the Ministry which marked her 4 months in office from the date of her appointment as State Commissioner of Woman Affairs.

The renonation and rehabilitation work according to her were executed under direct supervision of the State Ministry of Works and other engineers assigned to the work by the governor.

Work at the Family Support Programme (FSP) School has been completed with facilities as new roofing sheets, ceilings, windows, doors, air conditioners, classrooms, new offices and landscaped premisses with flowers, she hinted.

"All these are to ensure the provision of conducive learning environment for the vulnerable children in line with the government's policy on education as shown with the construction of Mega Schools located in different parts of the Maiduguri city and state", Zuwaira said.

At Budum Blind Workshop Center, Hajiya Zuwaira said: "four workshops with enough windows for adequate ventilation , 6 toilets, a mosque alongside a Community mosque near the premises was also renovated by the contractor."

"Wooden Frames for the production of the door mats mattresses and ordinator mats were constructed . The entire premises have been secured with a very strong fence, gate and security post as well as a borehole with overhead tank for water supply to meet up with their water needs frequently", Zuwaira said.

The commissioner noted that the governor has directed her ministry to assist and support about 1000 men, women, youths and children that were cleared and released by the security agencies to be rehabilitated and reintegrated with their families and loved ones in their various LGAs.

She added that the state government supported their rehabilitation and deradicalization and also assisted and supported them with skills acquisition tools and cash to enable them start a new life and be self reliant as well as employers of labour to others as they rejoin the society.

Hajiya Zuwaira further explained that she has had several extensive discussions with the Emir of Shani, District Heads of Kwaya Kusar and Wandali on government's intention to re-equip, renovate and rehabilitate health facilities and schools in Kwaya, Wandali etc especially, the clinics for antenatal and postnatal services as a support to the womenfolk in the area.

"I inspected Maternity Clinic, Police Station under construction and Women Development Center in Kwaya Kusar, Shani and Bayo as part of my visit to my constituency to lay foundation stone of new Kwaya Kusar market and the Quranic Graduation ceremony of Madrasat Markaz Tahfzu Quran.

"I visited Women Development Center in Shani, Kwaya Kusar and Bayo where I interacted with members of staff and promised to deliver their various challenges (complaints and problems) to His Excellency.

"I also inspected the renovation work at the Police Station in company of the Special Adviser to His Excellency on Projects Monitoring, Hon. Wakilbe. Earlier, I visited Emir Shani to congratulate him for hosting Minwara Festival and his support to women ", Zuwaira said.

The Honourable Commissioner explained that her ministry in collaboration with the National Film and Video Censors Board organized a one day workshop in Media Literacy and Capacity Building on Film Classification for Youths of the North East in Maiduguri where 100 participants went home with a mobile phone and stipends each as Youth Empowerment Scheme.

The Borno State First Lady, Dr. Falmata Babagama Umara Zulum empowered 300 IDPs women selected from various IDPs camps within designated IDPs camps in Maiduguri city with various skills acquisition kits and tools .

"Tailoring, Soap making, Deodorants, crafts, weaving, shoe making and cap making kits and tools like sewing machines, assorted chemicals, hand gloves, plastic bowls and buckets, caps, niddles, scissors, packets of sewing liquid , pins, razors, etc were distributed to empower the women", Zuwaira said.

Hajiya Gambo noted that football and other sports events was organized for mental and physical health and to Foster unity and love among the children of the IDPs through play of friendly matches between NYSC IDPs Camp and Bukumkutu Rehabilitation Transit Center.

The Honourable Commissioner received a pat on the back by Staff of the Ministry and the media team who urged her to maintain the tempo and continue the transformation activities in the ministry. She was encouraged to continue her inborn motherly passion of caring for the vulnerables, widows, orphans, physically challenged and move the ministry to greater heights.
