Accessing Gov. Ihedioha’s Morality In Imo Politics.

Man is a moral being, unique in creation possessing higher powers. His conduct is controlled by thoughts and emotions, by desires and intensions. His actions become the subject of his own and of other men’s criticism. These actions may be judged good or bad, praiseworthy or blameworthy, right or wrong. In the light of the above man is termed a ‘moral being’. Man is not just an animal, he is a person who can choose what he will do and who is in some way responsible for his actions. This is exactly what Ethics (which is derived from the Greek word Ethos (meaning conduct or way of life) is all about.

Ethical science seeks to examine conduct and to deliberate on correct modes of conduct. Down the centuries man has speculated about what constitutes “the good life.” Socrates for example maintained that education is the secret of virtue for knowledge according to him is virtue, this was his famous dictum. The Epicureans, on their own, regarded the pursuant of pleasure and the avoidance of pain as the only worthwhile aim in life.

Late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe maintained that education constitute more than learning when he said, “By education I do not mean simply learning, I mean…Training…the head, hand and the heart…Training in mind, in morals and in hand that helps make one socially efficient”. In my term, if people are denied of books, I mean the right type of books that could help in molding them morally; the society suffers from academic malnutrition, starvation, moral atrophy and depravity. Such a society will produce a morally depraved leader, one without conscience, who on the other hand, will not allow his life to be guided by same. Like the sayings of Juan Aries, “I am free when I accept the fact that my life should be ruled by conscience”.

Those leaders who disobey their consciences know without being told that they formulate new premises for life everyday which will in turn hunt them. Our conscience is an avenue through which the divine passes his message to us. It is unfortunate that some of our leaders belong to the school of thought which says that conscience is an expression of feelings of pleasure or pain.

The above school of thought tells us that an action is right if it is pleasure-producing and wrong if it is pain-producing. These philosophies belong to the ‘Hedonist School of Ethics’ and are very dangerous to our daily moral life. If conscience is just related to what makes us feel pleasure or pain, then life becomes entirely a matter of what we feel we like or dislike and there is no room left for God or for his will. It was this obnoxious thought that influenced the high level of looting the state treasury, abuse of human right and constant threat to life witnessed in Imo state during the previous administration of Chief Rochas Okorocha.

When you consider the depleting level of our values which is hitherto in tandem with our political system, one will be compelled to conclude that democracy in Nigeria is like four wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Our political leaders have not been able to offer yesterday’s solution to today’s problems as a result the modern youths think that politics is a game of deception bereft of values as Maureen Potter would say “Politicians are like nappies. They should be change often-and for the same reason”.

The reason for proper application of Maureen Potter’s philosophy in our context is so obvious because politics is a reality that touches almost all aspect of human existence. It pervades much of human life: family life, social, religious, economic and cultural life. Also national and even international activities belong to its proper domain. It is to be noted however that political ethics has to do with the moral principles at the basis of the political society.

Few months ago, there was a change of political leadership in Imo. Rochas and his family business was voted out; a change that produced Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha as the Governor of Imo who came to Rebuild. As a Christian leader in politics, Gov. Ihedioha should be guided by Christian political ethics which is a set of ideas derived from Christian principle in connection with the way to enhance the realization of the goal of life in a political society. To David Konstant this ethics is “more like a set of signposts, suggesting the way forward, or a set of question by which we can examine the way we live in a political society”.

The governor should try to carry everyone along and shun acrimony and resentment occasioned by gossip initiated by his “trusted” allies. Those he appointed should not do praise singing work. Some of his aids still write as if we are still at campaign grounds. There is need for proper inculcation of the culture of morality which our governor cherishes so much into them. Governor cannot be rebuilding and some are destroying indirectly. Should Imo fall inside a pit, the Re-build Imo agenda of Gov. Ihedioha shall be held responsible, if Imo is properly rebuilt in line with Ihedioha’s philosophy, the governor shall be praised.

Gov. Emeka Ihedioha started by not offending his core supporters and loyalists. This is what I call ���Political Settlement.” Majority of those who lost their political bearings during eight years of Rochas’s misrule have bounced back and have started enjoying the dividend of democracy from Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha. I can tell you that some of them opposed Ihidioha in 2015 and supported Rochas. Rochas abandoned those that worked for and with him in 2011 to 2015 through 2019. He claimed to have retired ninety percent of Imo political class. This is political immorality, immodest and vain-glory. Today, some of those he claimed to have retired are heading different probe panels instituted against him by the Rebuild Imo government. This in my term is morality in practice! Mel Brooks concludes, “If politicians don’t do it to their wives, they do it to their country.”

It is obvious that the term politics means different things to different scholars. Besides the common concept and meaning of the term, there are also etymological and socio-philosophical notions of the term which varies from one scholar to another. Pope Paul VI confirms the above in his Apostolic letter “Octogesima Adveniens” (1997) to the said various meaning of the term when he said, “It is true that in the term “politics” many confusions are possible and must be clarified”.

Today, almost everybody sees politics as a dirty game to be practiced by dirty people. Leonardo Boff stressed this point in the observation that not a few people regard “politics (as) something dirty, a lie, demagoguery.” C.I Ejizu makes the same point that some Christians see politics as “dirty, devilish and only fit for crooks, cheats and liars”. Why this obnoxious notion about politics? I may be forced to conclude that this obnoxious view is informed by the undesirable attitudes of our politicians. In the words of Cardinal Arinze, “If, however, the politician takes and gives bribes, assassinates other peoples characters… exploits women and embezzles government and party funds, then it is he (or she), not politics that is dirty.”

The Bible upholds politics as a good thing willed by God for the well-being of humanity. It was for this good reason that St.Paul affirms that “all government comes from God” and that “The state is there to serve God for (peoples) benefit…” (Rom. 13:1-7). It is hitherto obvious that the Christian concept of politics is founded on the common good and is opposed to separation of politics from morality. This is further confirmed by a South Africa Theologian T.S.N Gqubule thus, “The Christian religion teaches that God is lord of the whole life and the lord of all creation. There is no sphere of life such as politics, economics education which is not under his lordship.”

I must say that Chief Ihedioha is a seasoned politician that has respect for morality though not without human frailties. At the moment, he has value and concern for Imo people. A man of value is a man that has morality fixed firmly in his consciousness. Ihedioha has value and values give direction and firmness to life and they bring to life the important dimension of meaning which adds joy, satisfaction and peace to life.

Values identify a person, giving him a name, a face and character. Without values one would be floating like a piece of driftwood in the swirling waters of a river. Values bring quality to life. The philosophical study dealing with the nature of value and the types of value, as in morals, aesthetics religion, and metaphysics is known as axiology. Morality which is part of our value system is gradually eroding away thereby making politics a do or dies affair.

In the previous administration of Rochas , we saw a man whose administration was bereft of morality and value. He ended up hoodwinking the masses with his deceptive slogan of “my people, my people” while “my looting, my looting” was going on. This in my opinion is political corruption which is an anti-thesis to our values, ethics and morality. In the words of Philomena Agudo, “Values are so important to human beings, that without them, one cannot possibly discover a meaning to life.”
