Borno IDPs Stage Protest Over Lack of Humanitarian Support, Food Scarcity

Lack of humanitarian support and food scarcity at the IDPs camps in Maiduguri Metropolitan area in the past two.months from both the federal government, NEMA and state government, SEMA has triggered a peaceful protest by Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Maiduguri to register their grievances over lack of humanitarian support and feedung at the camps.

Large number of men, women and children were seen at the Gubio road IDPs camp protesting on Thursday. NGOs and other aid workers at the camp voiced out their minds describing their plight as a desperate situation that need urgent attention.

Most of the protesters were the new arrivals from Baga, Cross Kauwa, Kukawa ,Marte, Guzamala, Rann and Kala Balge Local Government Areas recently displaced by the Boko haram insurgents who claim that they were sleeping outside in open spaces and under the trees since their arrival..

However, the situation was greeted with a swift intervention from the security agencies at the camp to push back the protesting IDPs inside the camp as they were threatening to take to the streets.

The Gubio road Housing estate UDPs camp is said to be accommodating over 28,0000 internally displaced persons who were mostly from Baga, Cross Kauwa, Monguno, Kukawa, Guzamala and Kala Balge Local Government Areas of the state.

Efforts to get the Executive Chairman SEMA Borno State, Habits Yabawa Kolo to speak in the matter proved abortive at the time of filing in the report while the NEMA Zonal Coordinator was said not to be on seat to officially comment on the allegations of the protesters as he is the right person that can comment on the issue.
