Iyc:   Commends Senate On The Amendment Of The Nddc Act 2000.

By Ijaw Youth Council

The attention of the National Executives of the Ijaw Youth Council has been drawn to the recent amendment of the Niger Delta Development Commission (Establishment) Act 2000 and other matters connected therewith, sponsored by Senator Peter Nwaoboshi which scaled through third reading and subsequently passed by the Senate.

This gesture is quite commendable, especially at a time the hitherto marginalized and underdeveloped Niger Delta Region is grasping for breath of development and industrialization.

Following a proper harmonization of the Bill by both houses of the National Assembly and further assent by the President, the amended NDDC ACT 2000 would mandate International Oil Companies (IOCs) and other stakeholders in the gas sector to remit three percent statutory fund to boost the revenue base of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC); which in turn will create a conductive working and enabling environment for both the International Oil Companies and the Niger Delta Region.

We therefore call on all relevant arms of government to ensure the smooth passage of the Bill for an Act to amend the Niger Delta Development Commission (Establishment) Act 2000 for positive impact on the Niger Delta Region and the Nation in general.
