CSO Bashir Abubakar And Excesses Of Security Personnels

By Usman Santuraki

It was perplexing reading the account of the Punch newspaper correspondent in the presidential Villa, that send packing penultimate week by no less a person than the Chief Security Officer to the President over a story written by the correspondent, that the Chief Security Officer is not comfortable.

This is a clear excesses of how the Security Officers all over are doing. In the first place, there is no correlation between the Chief Security Officer and the press crew especially correspondents of various newspapers attached to the Presidential Villa. The right men, that deals with the press crew and the correspondents of newspaper were the two media handlers of the President Muhammadu Buhari-Special Adviser on Media Mr. Feminism Adesina and Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu.

What the CSO could have done in the case of the story, that he was not comfortable with is to discuss with these two media handlers of three President Muhammadu Buhari and they are the ones, to de with the issue.

But because things are not done appropriately in Nigeria and the penchant of security personnels to show their excesses, the CSO done what was not within the purview of his role in the Villa by sending away the Punch correspondent or reporter from the Villa without recourse of telling the two media handlers of the President Muhammadu Buhari.

Infact, these security personnels, that find themselves in the seat of government either at Government Houses across the country most of time indulge in politicking, that some time is detrimental to their profession.

Imagine a Chief Security Officer saying whether people like it or not President Muhammadu Buhari would spend eight years in the Villa. It is quite irritating to hear such from a security personnel, who found himself by certian circumtances protecting the President. Things need to be done in accordance to the laid down guides and procedures especially in government circles. There is no need for one to indulge himself in things outside his schedule of responsibility like what the Chief Security Officer has done by sending away the Punch reporter from the Villa simply because of a piece he wrote, that the CSO is not happy about it.

There is a clear demarcation between the security and media. What the CSO did is usurpation of the duty of the two media handlers of the President Muhammadu Buhari.

It is morally wrong for the CSO to have indulge in what is not within the purview of his official function. The proper thing for him to do is lay his compliant to any of the media handlers, who can liase with the media outfit and sanction be meted out to the correspondent. In advanced countries, things are done in the way, the CSO did to unilaterally send away the Punch man in the Villa simply because of a story he wrote on the health of the President and he is trying to over reach his bound by sending the reporter without recourse to lay down procedures.

We need to follow what this administration is preaching change in all ramification or is it a mere slogan "change begin with me".
