The wife of Governor of Anambra State, Chief (Mrs.) Ebelechukwu Obiano has called on women in Anambra State to join hands together and build a peaceful and prosperous society beginning with the family and ultimately extending to the larger society. The governors’ wife stated this in her message to Ndi Nne Anambra on Mothers’ Sunday on 26thmarch 2017.

Speaking on the significance of the 2017 Mothers’ Sunday which is witnessing a joint observance by the Anglican and Catholic Communities in the state, Mrs. Obiano told mothers that it is high time they joined hands to build together and thanked God for His mercies on the special day. Said she:

“Today, I wish to say to you that this is a time to lead by example. At this time of both political and economic crisis in our country, I sincerely believe that mothers are better placed to hold the moral fabric of our society together. It is a time that behoves on us to stand and assume responsibility as individuals, in our families, in our communities and in our state as a whole. It is a moment of leadership by example.”

Mrs Obiano further stated, “As mothers we all play important role in our families, we also have the singular responsibility of shaping the moral trajectory of the individual person and by extension that of the society. Mothers over time have been special messengers in God’s plan for mankind right from the special role played by Mary, the Blessed Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ. Indeed, the mother of Christ is our beacon of faith and inspiration especially in times of adversity.”

“Let us therefore rise above our mundane inhibitions and differences to chart the course of a society worthy of the dreams of our forebears whose vision of building a safe and progressive society transcended religious and partisan considerations.” Mrs. Obiano averred

The governors’ wife noted that her husband, Chief Willie Obiano recently marked three eventful years in office as governor on 17thMarch 2017. She highlighted her role beside the governor as Nne Anambra, and the journey towards the envisioned new Anambra, as well as the privilege she has had interacting and relating with Umunwanyi Anambra, especially on such occasions as this Mothers’ Sunday.

Mrs. Obiano assured of her commitment to the welfare of women in Anambra especially the less privileged and the helpless. She explained that her NGO, Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFÉ) has in the last three years supported the programmes of the government by building and handing over nine houses to indigent widows in communities like Agulu, Alor, Amorka, Amichi, Awba-Ofemili, Enugwu-Otu, Ogbunike, Nri, and Umunya; and toilets built in rural markets to promote hygiene.

Mrs. Obiano further explained that during the period, CAFÉ trained and empowered over 2500 women on new skills in the following areas: Tailoring and Fashion design, Soap making, Bakery and Confectionery, Hair dressing and Beauty Therapy, and Interior Decoration, Telephone and Computer repairs, Community Health Assistant Services etc, at no cost to the beneficiaries.

She urged mothers to embrace the spirit of enterprise by taking advantage of government initiatives that support cooperative societies with access to funds that will improve their businesses, and support their husbands in order to maintain stability at home and peace in the larger society. Finally she urged mothers to brace-up for challenges ahead in the knowledge that the future of our children are assured by God’s grace in a state where we all demonstrate equal commitment to the promotion of peace and stability.
