IBOM POWER, 15 POWER TURBINES PUSH UP ELECTRICITY GENERATION IN NIGERIA

By Michael Dada

In the last one week, 16 power generating turbines have become functional and pushed up electricity generation from a little above 3,000 megawatts recorded earlier this month to over 4,000MW, The Punch reports.

Since the 16 turbines of the various power plants across the country began to function, electricity generation had stabilized at over 4,000MW, rising to 4,378.7MW on February 16.

It will be recalled that the Managing Director of Ibom Power Company, Engr. Meyen Etukudo announced the resumption of operations following the restoration of gas supply to its facility on the 12th of February after more than 114 days of inactivity.

Officials of the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing attributed the development to the recent improvement in gas supply to the power plants while data from the power sector revealed that since the country crossed the 4,043.7MW mark on February 13, electricity generation had continue to rise.

The minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola while speaking at the monthly Power Sector and Stakeholders Meeting, which took place at the Olorunsogo injection sub-station of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) had said Nigeria’s current power generation will rise to 6,000 megawatts if the damaged oil pipelines in the Niger delta are restored.

According to industry data, Trancorp Ughelli Power reported that it recorded functionality in 10 of its turbines. The other functional power turbines include Omotosho I, Olorunsogo I, Afam VI, Alaoji NIPP, Ihovbor NIPP, and Ibom power plant.
