Ghana election: Like Jonathan, Pres. Mahama concedes defeat, calls Akufo-Addo before final results

By The Citizen

Like Nigeria's ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, who called the then All Progressives Congress, APC candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, to concede defeat in the 2015 Presidential election, Ghana's President, John Mahama, on Friday evening called to congratulate opposition candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo, 72, the acclaimed winner of Wednesday's presidential election in the country.

One of Akufo-Addo's aides, Eugene Arhin, confirmed to journalists that the President had called Akufo-Addo, candidate of the New Patriotic Party.

Mahama had previously said  he would respect the outcome of the election.

He also said in a tweet that the Electoral Commission should be allowed to carry out its mandate.

Final result is expected to be declared by the EC on Saturday (today).

The commission announced on Thursday that it was manually verifying the results because its electronic system had been targeted by hackers, but urged people to ignore 'fake results' circulating on social media.
