The general public were yesterday shocked with a revelation in respect of the conditions of service of teachers in Ondo State. The revelation has it that apart from battling with a gargantuan acute shortage of man power in her schools, secondary school teachers in the state have been prohibited from being promoted to grade level 17.

Aside the aforementioned, the Mimiko led administration has scrapped the constitutionally approved 27.5% teachers’ salary scale allowance which teachers collects nationwide, leaving them at the gate of poverty.

Also, contrary to the charter of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) which Nigeria is a signatory to that science teachers in secondary Schools in Sub-sahara Africa be paid 2% of their monthly salary as allowance with the aim of growing the culture of ICT, the Ondo State Government only pay her science teachers N25 monthly.

Speaking during an interactive section on Thursday with the Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for November 26thgovernorship election in Ondo State, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN, the Chairman of the Organized Labour Unions and Pensioners (OLUP) in the state, Comrade Abiodun Falohun said despite promises made by Governor Mimiko before his emergence, teachers in the state are the worse treated in Nigeria.

Flanked by OLUP secretary, Mrs Tayo Fayoju and some leaders of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), Falohun said the welfare of teachers in the state is nothing to write home about, stressing that things are that worse in most schools in the state in such a way that English teachers now teaches mathematics due to lack of man power.

“Your Excellency sir (referring to Akeredolu), science teachers in Ondo State earn N25 monthly as allowance which is not so in other states. Even the 27.5% teacher’s salary scale (TSS) that teachers have been collecting before the current government came on board has been scrapped.

‘Today, many schools are facing acute shortage of teachers. Take for instance, A.U.D secondary school at Iju/Itaogbolu has just four teachers. Teachers are no longer allowed to get to grade level 17.

“Instead of permanent secretary, Mimiko appointed teachers as tutor generals, a position that is not known to law. No training, and salaries are not being paid as of when due. We are pleading with your Excellency to give us justice when you get there. Please be rest assured of our support come November 26th,” Falohun said.

Akeredolu while responding, promises to invest massively in the capacity development of teachers in the state if elected.

“I’ll train and retrain teachers. We won’t owe you salary and every allowance due to you shall be given to you. If we don’t motivate teachers, how would teachers engage our children both in learning and in character?” Akeredolu asked.

In a related development, the forum of league of Imams in Ondo State has endorsed Rotimi Akeredolu of the APC ahead of the November 26thgovernorship election.

The Chief Imam of Akure Central Mosque, Alhaji Abdukarem Yayi Akorede who spoke on behalf of the Imams on Thursday when Akeredolu visited them at Araromi mosque in Akure said Akeredolu’s integrity, honour, uprightness, truthfulness and sincerity of purpose stands above all his opponents.

The elated Akeredolu thanked the Chief Imams for their kind words, promising them of equality in allocation of resources among Christians and Moslem in the state if elected.
