Matthew Hassan Kukah, the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, says death has robbed the Ogoni struggle of a key participant, with the passing of Ken Saro-Wiwa jnr. He was a friend of the Bishop.

In an email to the President of the Ogoni Central Indigenous Authority, OCIA, Dr. Goodluck Diigbo, Kukah extended his condolence to the Wiwa's family.

“The duty now falls on all the good people of Ogoniland to close ranks and live up to the ideals and contributions of the Wiwa Family to the struggle for justice in the land,” remarked the Bishop.

Diigbo said Kukah’s words are soothing, and the Ogoni people would continue to count on his amity and counsel.

Excerpts from Kukah’s mail to Diigbo:
“I have received with shock and sadness, the news of the sudden death of my friend, brother and son, Ken Wiwa.

I have fond memories of my several encounters with Ken. May God grant him peace and console the Wiwa family.

The duty now falls on all the good people of Ogoniland to close ranks and live up the ideals and contributions of the Wiwa Family to the struggle for justice in the land. The death of Ken at this time robs the struggle of a key participant.”

Bishop Kukah had served as the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Ogoni/Shell Reconciliation Panel during the administration of three presidents - Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Musa Yar'Adua, and Goodluck Jonathan.
