The Nigerian Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) says the Government should come back to the negotiations table to implement and review earlier agreement made with the Union.

It stated that a number of conditions were given in the 2009 agreement with the union, which the government had not looked into.

Speaking at a press conference , on Tuesday, in Abuja, the President of the Union, Biodun Ogunyemi, touched on a number aspects where the association felt Nigerians had been failed by the government.

"The inability of Nigeria's political class to resolve the fundamental problems it has helped to create and nourish are noticeable in welfare problems, educational system, economic mismanagement and corruption, to mention a few."

On Education, the President aired that due to poor allocation of funds for several years has put the sector in a state of despair.

" the consequence of several years of poor allocation if funds to education is the deplorable state of public institutions of learning at all levels, and the poor conditions of service for workers."

Biodun Ogunyemi mentioned the practice of crony capitalism by the political class in the country which according to him is 'government of the rich, by the rich and for the rich.'

"This is a system of government characterised by the dominance of selfish, greedy, inept and corrupt dominant class without capacity to generate productive capability for an overall development of the country."

He warned that "Corruption will remain with us for as long as we continue to operate this exploitative neo-liberal system, which alienates and marginalise the great majority of the people in the society,".

Meanwhile, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)has thumbed up the National Universities Commission (NUC)or scrapping pre-degree and diploma programmes in the Nigerian University System.

The ASUU President stated that where the nation's Universities had gone beyond their areas of jurisdiction,NUC being the regulatory body, reserves the right to take any actions it deems fit and necessary.

He also asked the government to plan to change the Joint Admission Matriculation Board act without proper consultation with the universities Senate boards may have a negative impact on the board.
