SAN FRANCISCO, October 10, (THEWILL) – The Peoples Democratic Party has called for the cancelation of the local government and local council development areas election in Ogun state held on Saturday as the All Progressives Congress won all the 57 chairmanship seats in the election.

According to the results announced by the Chairperson of the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC), Alhaja Risikat Ogunfemi, the APC also won 346 out of the 349 councillorship seats, the Unity Party of Nigeria won two councillorship seats while the PDP won one councillorship seat.

Speaking at the commission's headquarters in Abeokuta, Ogunfemi declared that the election was conducted to elect Chairmen and Councillors into the state's 20 LGs and 37 newly created LCDAs.

However, before the commission completed the announcement of the results, the PDP had condemned the outcome of the election, insisting that it was tainted with irregularities and violence, which were allegedly masterminded by the APC.

Addressing journalists at Park Inn, Kuto, Abeokuta, the South-West Zonal Secretary of the PDP, Revd. Bunmi Jenyo, flanked by the state Chairman of the party, Sikirulai Ogundele, and other officials, declared that the council election should be cancelled.

“During voting process, ballot boxes and ballot papers were criminally hijacked by miscreants armed to the teeth, who were identified members of the APC in some local government areas, particularly in Abeokuta,” he said.

“There were sporadic shootings in some local councils. While some PDP members, who resisted the hoodlums, sustained varying degrees of injuries, two people had gunshot wounds.”

However, the state chapter of the Inter-party Advisory Council, which comprises state Chairmen of different political parties, faulted the PDP's claim, arguing that the election was free, fair and transparent.
